Popular Outdoor Pet Structures
If you are considering keeping a large number of animals, undoubtedly you will be considering pet structures to contain them. Rescues, breeders and boarding kennels alike are required to provide adequate shelter for the animals in their care. Popular outdoor pet structures include: dog kennels and catteries, run in sheds and rabbit hutches.
One of the most common outdoor pet structures are dog kennels. Dog kennels can be a simple run with an enclosed room at the end to protect the dog from the elements, or can be as elaborate as a full sized building with indoor/outdoor runs, storage and plumbing. Many of the kennels on the market today are prefabricated, allowing for customization to build the perfect sized kennel for your needs.
When choosing a dog kennel, be sure to keep sanitation in mind. Many models allow for easy clean up with a garden hose. Avoiding pet structures with exposed wood parts, as wood can become a breeding ground for bacteria and germs.
While not as popular in the United States as elsewhere in the world, outdoor pet structures serving as catteries provide a peaceful setting for rescued cats or cats kept for breeding purposes. Pet structures used as catteries must have proper ventilation, insulation, heating and cooling in place for the well being of the cats.
Run in Sheds
For those that keep livestock such as horses, goats, sheep or cows, run in sheds provide a way for open pastureland to utilized regardless of the weather. Run in sheds allow grazing animals a way to get out of the heat or rain without the upkeep of a barn or stable. These pet structures are typically much less expensive than a fully enclosed building for livestock.
Rabbit hutches can be as basic as a wire bottom cage on stilts, but unless you only allow your rabbit to spend time in the hutch as an occasional break from being indoors, you may want to consider upgrading from the most basic model of rabbit hutches. Proper rabbit husbandry requires an enclosed pet structure for the rabbit to hide, as well as roof over the top of the cages to provide shade and run off when it rains.
Regardless of the type of pet structures you are shopping for, always buy the highest quality outdoor pet structures you can afford. Less expensive models are more likely to have problems that require costly repairs down the road.
