The Joseph Wilson Home
National Register of Historic Places

One is immediately struck with awe upon first glimpse and coming face to face with the majestic “Wilson Hill Estate” … Still taking its proud stance in Southern Grandeur and Splendor as it has since its completion in early 1861. The grand entrance portico and gravel drive are reminiscent of the set from “Gone with the Wind”.

Construction having begun in 1840 , the home belong to well-known Joseph Wilson , a wealthy community lender who experienced interruption by the War Between the States yet went on to completion immediately following the War. The timber for this magnificent home was cut from the forests of the Wilson plantation. The architecture is Classic Revival with four large white columns on the front. Mature large maples surround the home and the tall windows across the front of the home with hinged doors open to serve ( They were originally only affordable by the very wealthy, and their use was confined to palaces and temples. Ordinary people had no hinges on their doors, or had no doors at all) and just as in the old days guest can wander from the parlors and dining room through those open windows onto the gracious verandas to catch the cooling breezes.

Double front entry doors open into a beautiful welcoming foyer flanked by formal parlor and a formal dining. The main level also consist of a library/study, full bath, laundry and fabulous kitchen with large granite island. Lower level repeats with spacious wide center hall. The finest quality materials were used.
