Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form the Manipur government for the second term as it won the majority 32 out of the total 60 seats. Results of the polls were declared on Thursday evening.
This was the second time in the history of Manipur that a party has got a majority. The last time it happened was in 2012 when Congress won 42 seats.
The Indian National Congress on the other hand was only limited to five seats, the worst ever performance by the party in Manipur. Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma led the National People’s Party (NPP) won seven seats.
While the Naga People’s Front (NPF) has won five seats, the newly floated party of Kuki People’s Alliance also won two seats. Three independent candidates also won.
“The historic victory that we have achieved today is a testament of the people’s faith in the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble PM @narendramodi Ji and citizen-centric governance”, Manipur CM N Biren Singh tweeted.
The BJP has already hinted at a split with its previous partner in government, the NPP.
